User talk:Peteforsyth

Hi Peteforsyth and welcome to AboutUs. I am happy that you have decided to explore the wonderful world of wiki. I notice that you've moved FreeGeek.org to Free Geek. I understand that it's only reasonable to do so, but would like to point out that by doing it we lose the link to the original website. May be we can have the page titled after that domain name and then have the name of the organization may be as a prominent heading. What do you think? Feel free to edit and change any page at AboutUs because all edits are considered to be EfficientlyExpressedSuggestions. Check out brand new tours to learn more about wiki and AboutUs. If you need any further information/assistance, see help or leave me a message through my talk page. Also see 5 Great Reasons to Make a Personal Page. Best. Asad Butt

Hi again, I have moved the page back to FreeGeek.org so that the title link leads to the original website. I have also provided a redirect from Free Geek to FreeGeek.org so that anybody looking for "free geek" will automatically reach the same page. Does that work for you? The emails on AboutUs are protected using hash code in order to avoid spam. You can do it simply by putting "" at the end of the email. This protects the image from being harvested by turning it into an image. I have corrected the email address on your page. Feel free to drop me a line if you've any questions. Best, Asad

Hey Pete, it was great to meet you today at WikiWednesday. Can you refresh my memory as to the Portland WikiPedia.org page that had the two things a week...? Next month I'll let you beat me at ping pong. KristinaWeis | **talk** 23:42, 3 October 2007 (PDT)

help!

OK I have a couple questions…anybody out there?

  1. I tried to create a page for thegivingtreenw.org, but the "auto builder" seems to have stalled or something. I typed it in, and got this: "It appears that AboutUs has not heard of this domain before. Please wait while domain info is compiled. You will be redirected momentarily." But it never built the page, or said what went wrong. (This is a new web site, for an organization I'm working with.) Is there a way to spur a magic, but lazy, bot into action? HiHo Sillllllver!
  2. On a more general note, is it considered a good thing to create redirects from an organization's name to its domain? For instance, should I make a page called Oregon Historical Society and have it redirect to ohs.org?
  3. Are there lots of templates to use here, like on Wikipedia? If so, is there someplace I can go to see what's available, or is it just a learn-as-you-go thing? Is it cool if I copy templates over from WP or other sites?
  4. Is it really true that Wikis will save the world?
  5. How would I upload an image? I can't find an upload link.
  6. Is there any kind of policy/consensus/guideline about how to handle disambiguation? Let's say I work for Apple Music, and I want Apple to do something besides just redirecting to apple.com. How would I best accomplish that? Is it just totally up to me?

Thanks for any input! -Peteforsyth 22:59, 14 November 2007 (PST)

I'm not the expert in many of these areas, but here's what I've got. #1 - we've been having some issues lately with the bot and creating new pages, some of which are logged in Category:ErrorLog. #2 - I think it's all up to you, not a bad thing but not required. I do it sometimes if I'm sure that search term should only take people to that one page and that they wouldn't really be looking for something else. #3 - See Category:AboutUs:Templates and probably talk to User:Vartan who is our resident template guru. #4 - Yes. #5 - see Special:Upload which is available under the "useful links" box to the right. #6 - Probably totally up to you yes; I don't see much disambiguation here, and mostly in the form of people's name such as Kristina as an example. See you on the 5th probably! Kristina | **talk** 16:42, 15 November 2007 (PST)

Why thank ye kindly! Much appreciated, esp. #4. I totally did not see that Useful Links thingy no matter how hard I looked. Sometimes I wonder about me. -Peteforsyth 20:14, 15 November 2007 (PST)

Re: InterestingHappenings

I'd say that SuggestionBox and IRC are great ways to ask broad questions to many people at once. pppm.uoregon.edu is looking pretty good, but if you'd like to make it more of a standard DomainPage the Domain Page Boilerplate can guide you. Kristina ..talk.. 18:45, 17 December 2007 (PST)

I went ahead and incorporated the boilerplate. If you need anything else, let me know. DrewMyers | talk 20:47, 17 December 2007 (PST)
Great, thanks to you both. I sort of get it, now that I see it. I customized the "address" field, so hopefully that'll populate automatically with a screenshot…is that just a bot function I have to wait for? I tried putting in a street address too, but don't think it worked. -Peteforsyth 21:11, 17 December 2007 (PST)

Map Section

It took me a few minutes to get the map to work. The University of Oregon part was confusing the map. But the "Address" in the map section tells the template where to find the info. Do you want it the way it's set? DrewMyers | talk 21:40, 17 December 2007 (PST)

Oh- I think I understand now. It didn't do that when you first put it in, but since then I added the "Address" section. The one relies on the other, I guess. Cool! -Peteforsyth 21:44, 17 December 2007 (PST)
That was my bad. I only did half the job. Too worried about not trashing any of your work and not paying enough attention. DrewMyers | talk 21:46, 17 December 2007 (PST)
No worries -- thanks much for helping me sort it out! -Peteforsyth 22:16, 17 December 2007 (PST)

Re:Stuff

Hi, Pete it was good to meet you too. I will certainly think about your question and would love it flush it out with you and learn more about what you're up to. Let's meet up ths week. Kasey 08:32, 31 December 2007 (PST)

Hi Pete, I really like how Mike Gravel and Dennis Kucinich have .us extensions. Kasey
Yeah, I like that too. Any chance of you guys picking up about.us? That'd be cool! -Pete 12:06, 1 February 2008 (PST)

re: recent vistors

Hi Pete,

I see this spot as the best possible place for people to experiment. I appreciate you helping tend it, as it usually takes at least half a dozen edits per day by experienced folks. This is much better than before where each for WikiTour articles were needing several edits per day to restore. I find this a great tool for welcoming as well, as we can often see which DomainPage the person is interested in. Thanks much for noticing! TedErnst (talk) 07:25, 6 February 2008 (PST)

I love your description of the Open Lobby!

Somehow, I just stumbled on it now, "....project to inject transparency and accessibility into government by brute force!" Now THAT is something I can "hang onto" as a handy description! Maybe some "more respectable" version of this deserves to be on the page itself? I'll think about it!

Love, Mx

Pete, thanks for your comment earier in SuggestionBox. I copied it to AboutUsBugs. Kasey 19:22, 3 April 2008 (PDT)

google map

Thanks! It's not very easy... Kristina (contact me) 21:11, 15 July 2008 (PDT)

I don't believe I have used "my maps" on there. I was thinking we could perhaps look at this a little in person either at WikiWednesday or another time (I learn much better that way). But also I was thinking of doing a blog post on the weblog about this feature, but I want to try to make the google map page better so that I could link people there to show them how to use and figure it out (particularly how to find the lat/long). I don't actually Flick much, but AboutUs does a little. If there are any that you'd like in particular I could email you them as attachments if you link me to the Facebook page, etc. Best, Kristina (contact me) 12:02, 3 September 2009 (PDT)
