Windows Vista
Windows Vista.com is the official website for Windows Vista, the latest operating system from Microsoft, collectively known as the Microsoft Windows Family. Released at midnight (EST) on January 30, 2007 at a special launch event in New York City, Windows Vista is the successor to the wildly popular Windows XP, released in 2001.Features
More than just a simple upgrade to XP, Windows Vista contains hundreds of new features that took over 5 years in the making, most significantly:
- An improved search feature
- Multimedia creation and playback (DVD maker, media player, photo gallery)
- Increased ability for at home networks
- Backup and restore applications
- A revamped mail program
- Better parental controls
- A much touted new visual makeover which includes animations, transparencies and other eye candy.
- An greater emphasis on overall software security, beginning at the operating system level in Windows Vista.
Different Editions
Windows Vista comes in five different flavors, suiting the needs of different users. (Comparison chart)
- Ultimate -- For power users, Microsoft offers the "Ultimate" edition, with both the productivity and play of the other editions in one combined package.
- Home Premium -- The "regular" edition of Windows Vista for both home desktops and laptops. Includes most of the features of the "Ultimate" edition, without hardware protection and HD movie creation capabilities.
- Home Basic -- Suitable for basic computing needs, like e-mail, internet browsing and photo viewing, doesn't include some of the advanced "eye candy" and visual interfacing as the other versions.
- Business -- Designed specifically for small businesses, this edition skimps on some of the multimedia stuff (photos, media center) to focus on the needs of business, like better business network connectivity and hardware protection
- Enterprise -- For large global organizations and businesses with demanding IT infrastructures, provides for extra hardware-based data encryption among other things.
