OurWork

Hi Saliha, every two weeks we prioritize the projects we'll be working on. We keep this list on OurWork where each project has a page describing why we're doing it, when the project's done and actionable tasks describing what work needs to be done and how people can help. The page should ideally be the base of information and communication for the project since we have offices in Lahore and Portland (and contributers all over the globe). Can you take a look at the list of projects on OurWork and put the projects you'll be working on User:Salihawaqar/Projects. I've already made a basic page for the university portal and put that on your project list, but it needs a little bit of work. Feel free to rename the page as "University Portal" probably isn't the correct wording. And of course let me know how confused you are by the whole thing ;) - Scott Keeler Comment_green.gif

People Pages

This Monday at 11:00 am pacific, we're going to have a meeting in the Portland office on how our user pages should look and function. There's some information on the project page located at Projects:People Pages Leave your thoughts, ideas, and concerns in the discussion area. If you can't attend the meeting the project page is the place to make sure your voice is heard by the community. - Scott Keeler Comment_green.gif

DoneDone

Hi Saliha, I am hoping that Ray or Brandon gave you those things you asked me for the other day. Let me know if they didn't. Also, I removed WikiAnatomy Tour 3 from your announcement on the DailyBuzz that it was DoneDone. If you would like to particiapate on that project, please sign up at Projects:WikiAnatomy. How did you come to the point of thinking it was DoneDone? Best, MarkDilley

Working thesis

Hey,

In the Working thesis page, I thought we should add a final bullet point about the difference between a working thesis and a thesis:

  • To finally get to your actual thesis, you would focus your working thesis into a claim: "Complex interdependence has facilitated the formation of transnational terrorist networks post-9/11 by ?????????"

Any ideas how to end this sentence? Complex interdependence is not exactly my specialty. FatimaRaja 02:52, 26 August 2007 (PDT)

WelcomingPeople

I just wanted to say hello and that I've noticed some of you welcome message in RC and I think it's great! (WelcomingPeople is one of my favorite things to do and I think it's pretty important to this wiki.) Let me know if you ever have any questions, and have a great day! AboutUsPeopleCleanup

Hi Saliha, as an effort to minimize the distinction between AboutUsStaff and ActiveMembers, we are replacing the AboutUsStaff/AboutUsEmployees/AboutUsStaffCity categories with AboutUsCity Category. You are welcome to share your ideas/thoughts on AboutUsPeopleCleanup#Discussion page. Best, Asad

Common Answers

Hey Salihawaqar,

I thought I'd drop by and leave you some notes I have after looking at your work so far this period. I think you're doing a great job, so these are mostly to help you finish honing the work this week. Even though made regarding specific articles, most comments could be applied to the work as a whole.

  • Category:Brad Pitt: The overall construction here is very good! Images desperately need citations (this is very important)! All of the link information you've gathered is great, but I think we need to ALSO include internal links and short descriptions of these sites to make this information more navigable.
  • Category:Linkin Park: Overall very good construction. Needs an intro description and short lines about each link. Also, I think adding more information about lyrics resources, where to buy their music, see videos etc. would be helpful. Check out what other people are doing here in particular to get a better idea of how this could be filled out.
  • Category:Angelina Jolie: Very nice layout (great pics and intro description!). I know the movies section could be expanded to list all movies she's been in, or at least some other movie sites that list this information (IMDB.com). Make sure to add short descriptions to each link and have both internal/external links on the page.
  • Category:Justin Timberlake: I think this page is off to a good start, but could have a lot more information. Peak around at the other 'people' oriented pages to see what I mean, but basically this just needs more.
  • Category:Avril Lavigne: I really like you're different take on this one! Remember to have both internal and external links, and to add short descriptions to these. Also, I think this would benefit from a reincorporation of some of the elements of the other people pages, the search results feel in particular.
  • Category:Beer Tasting: Good overall. I'd definitely think about removing the Wine Tasting section and linking to this as a related page.
  • Category:4 Star Hotel: This is a hard one, so congrats on taking it on. I think you've done a good job of balancing the information with the generality of the term. Some of the sections, however, are so general that they don't need to be listed here. The 'Compare Prices' section, for instance, should be linked to from here but really has nothing to do explicitly with the term itself (these are other resources). All in all, I think this article might end up being shorter than anticipated given its generality.
  • Category:Gender Studies: I like this one a lot, although some of the same notes apply. Add descriptions to links, and an intro. I think this could be more full of descriptive information overall.
  • Category:Art Association: Good content and use of images, although I think the page could use some reorganization to look like the others - the block of text in the middle is intimidating to anyone who doesn't want to read the entire article.

Thanks for doing all this great work so far! Please respond to things I've said and add any thoughts you have on the process to this week's task. I look forward to seeing even more progress over the next week!

Chris

More notes

Salihawaqar,

Thanks for the message back - I totally missed the IMDB link, so good job including that! I agree with your comment on personal taste affecting these common answers pages, but I think we should note that there is such a thing as too much information. In these cases (beer tasting, 4 star hotel), our ideas of what the page should include are close enough. But this could be problematic with more general pages - if we don't decide upon some general limit, then applying these rules to a more expansive topic will result in a page that is too long to consume. Too much information, in this case, can be worse than too little. My idea would be to link to this information on another page - 'wine tasting', for instance, is related to beer tasting but has nothing to do with beer tasting itself. My opinion here would be to include this information as a related link. What do you think of this?

Again, thanks so much for the feedback. These are just my ideas, and we'll be pooling all of our thoughts together as we refine this process to be the best it can be.

One more thing: please make sure to leave some reflections on this general process on this week's task page so we can see how to improve communication, content, etc. - hearing what everyone has to say will be the most efficient way to move forward!

Hi Saliha. I've made a discussion page for the art portal; see what you think.

Writing Lab etc

Hey Saliha,

Was wondering, should we start discussing what to do about the next phase of the Writing Lab? Maybe start contacting people as we had thought. What do you say?

And any developments regarding content work I should know about on IRC or elsewhere, do let me know...

FatimaRaja 01:25, 25 September 2007 (PDT)

Yes, I'll do the same, I think. Wasn't able to speak to my art friend before I left, but I'll email her and see what she thinks. Do email or leave me a message if there are any new things I should know about; I seem to always come on IRC when there's no one here... Thanks! FatimaRaja 01:52, 25 September 2007 (PDT)

Hi Saliha, thank you for your compliments. :)) I don't know if I manage to make your caricature, because I'm very very busy. I'll try later on, but I don't promise it to you. Bye User:Gio

Thank You

I truly appreciate all the nice things you said on my talk page! and will continue to do my best to help improve every facet I am able to AboutUS. I will also try to invite and encourage new/current individuals to participate as much as possible. I have quite a bit of interests which I continue to juggle such as my writing, website, entreprenuer education, translation (including arabic pages), welcoming, patrolling, etc. all of these fascinate and entertain me each day... I look forard to pairing with you sometime to accomplish more in the future.. Perhaps you may have some ideas on what we can work on.. :) Bryan Daugherty My Talk

Portal:Art Talk

Hey Saliha,

I've tweaked the look of the portal a little, trying to make it less techy and more eye-catching than most portals. What do you think?

I've also put in some possible sections:

  • Do Art - I thought we could start a gallery of art here each one leading to an artist page as we get artists building their pages.
  • Learn Art - presently up in the air - if we get teachers interested, they can use this section, otherwise we can turn this into a directory for artcrit.
  • Talk Art - discussion page
  • Find Art - external links, especially to galleries and art cooperatives

FatimaRaja 07:10, 1 October 2007 (PDT)

Hey, forgot to reply yesterday. Art for kids looks good. For the artist pages, I thought we could do what Mehrunnisa did for the Underground portal, and approach a few young local artists, set up a couple of model pages and hope that that gets the ball rolling.... FatimaRaja 02:57, 3 October 2007 (PDT)
Finally heard back from my art teacher friend. She's very interested in using the portal, and I'll work with her over the next few days to develop something that she and her students can use.... FatimaRaja 04:14, 5 October 2007 (PDT)

LASIK Centers in Baltimore, Maryland

Saliha,

I noticed you were the last one to touch the content on this page. There are still several red links that we need to fill out. Could you take care of this or pass it on so we can move to working on the cities for the new work period?

PortlandTech

Saliha:

Just a heads up: we think it would be best to focus the rest of the week's PortlandTech work on perfecting the pages already in the category so far. We're gonna work on adding more from the Portland office and through our connections here, and we will bring you guys into this effort in the next period. Hopefully this makes things easier.

Talk soon - have a great day!

Work in progress for PortlandTech

Saliha,

In addition to the new page for the overall DoneDone status of pages (PortlandTech/DoneDone Pages - thanks to Mehr on that!), we're going to continue keeping track of individual work in progress on the task page now. So, for this period Build out PortlandTech (Nov. 1-15) has a section at the bottom where everyone can put the articles they are working on with a status (Done or In Progress) next to them. We can leave notes here on those that need improvement; DoneDone articles will be marked here and moved to PortlandTech/DoneDone Pages.

Let me know if you have any thoughts. Other than that I'll be in touch with you on the work via the task page! Thanks for the work so far!

ChrisBabson

Grabb.it

Thanks! I was having trouble finding that page! :)

PortlandTech/People

Saliha,

Just a heads up - we've been categorizing people pages with a bit of a simpler format that allows for these tags to be expanded into other portals that you might want to check out. Instead of Category:PortlandTechPeople, simply categorize a person-page with: Category:PortlandTech and Category:Person. Then we can use the intersect tool to create a dynamic list without needing to create a new category. In addition to this, we've simplified the other people tag formats to mimic those on company pages:

Category:PortlandTechFounder turns into Category:Founder
Category:PortlandTechCEO turns into Category:CEO
Category:PortlandTEchVicePresident turns into Category:Vice President
etc....

These can all be intersected with Category:PortlandTech and to get more specific lists of the different people in the area. If you look at PortlandTech/People you'll see a basic rubric of the possible intersections - when the given tags are added to a page, it appears automatically in these lists.

Let me know if you have any thoughts on this, but I think it is a bit simpler and expands the universality of our tagging system the by using the intersect functionality.

WhoWeAre

Hi Saliha, I saw Chris wrote that :) , I want to make sure you know about WhoWeAre the consensus poll underway to craft the company mission statement and assess our values as an "Inc.", CommunityMembers and as staff. If you have any questions about the poll, how to maneuver the process to participate or change you status, I'd be happy to answer your questions...or at least try to. Kasey

Remaining LASIK Listing(DoneDone)

Hi!Saliha! This is the remaining LASIK Listing :

Asma Khan

LASIK

Saliha,

Thanks for the note on this - I think it a great idea (and about time) to get some metrics on LASIK so we can have an idea of (and feel great about) our progress. The idea from our side of things is to cover the next 4 cities so that we complete the top 50 us cities, and then take a break for a bit to focus on PortlandTech and the Election Portal. While the bulk of content is moving on that, Tak and I were planning on revamping the project/portal to look much more like PortlandTech. This would include both a similar metrics system and a redesigned portal page to be much simpler.

At any rate, this is a great idea! Why don't I add a task for it on the next iteration and we can pair with whoever else is interested on building a good metrics page and rebuilding the portal page. Meanwhile, the rest of the team can finish with the listings and we'll get DoneDone on the top 50 US cities.

Let me know your thoughts.

Tech Pages

Hey Saliha,

I have reviewed your pages in the series Q, V, T, do take a look at your pages in needs work. Please don't put them in needs review unless at least the following information has been filled out:

1-Company Name at the top

2-Logo(there shouldnt be a heading by the name of logo.instead this logo should come right after the heading of the company name)

3-Description:2 lines each and in two different paragraphs at least and preferably.Note there should be no description heading.instead the description should follow right after the logo. The description should be in your view and not the companies so it shouldnt say "we" do the following etc

4-Products and Services- A One line description of each service if possible and available
