Welcome

Hello Mduquaine... Welcome to AboutUs!

I noticed your edits to the wiki DomainPage for Exprt.com. I tried tweaking your logo just to give you an idea of what is possible (see ImageHelp for more ideas), but feel free to revert my change as it was merely a SuggestedEdit.

I'm excited that you've chosen to explore the wonderful world of wiki here at AboutUs.org - the place where everyone may collaborate to build the commons and community through their constructive edits and participation. Welcome! Would you care to add a little bit about yourself on your personal page so the community can get to know you? (You can see mine as an example by clicking my name below.) Be sure to let us/me know if you have any questions along the way - you can leave a message on my talk page via the "talk" link by my name (see How do I send a message to another user? and How do I improve my signature? to learn how). You may also join the AboutUs WebIRC to chat or ask a question. Below are some links that I have found useful...

Welcome to the AboutUs community - it's great to have you!

Hello Mary! On Exprt.com I just tried out having the text wrap around the image with the "left" tag - this makes the image go to the left and the text wrap more closely to it. I admit it didn't end up looking as good, but this is something that I have done with the image on my personal page as an example. It looks like you changed it back by taking out the "left" tag which looks nicer, and this is why it may look the same to you. I just wanted to show you one of the options that you have when using images within a wiki. (You can also add captions, resize the image, etc. - See ImageHelp for details.) Yep, wiki is quite fun and useful as you get to know it, and fairly simple to start using and learning. Let me know if I can help with anything or answer any questions. Have fun playing with wiki! Great to have a kindred soul here!

The Wizard of 'Us'

Hi Mary,

Thanks for the nice message. It's interesting how there are so many things we all have in common. Things which cross cultures. People tend to forget that we have a common humanity that is more important than all the differences that are dividing the world today. I've sometimes caught myself being surprised that someone completely different from me has a similar thought or does a similar action and then I somehow feel that surprised at being surprised and I ask myself why I felt they were so different in the first place.

It's hard to see similarities where I live at the moment. Pakistan is such a polarised society and many people only see things in black and white whereas there are so many shades of grey in between. All societies are this way I suppose but the key is for all parties to accept the differences and be inclusive rather than divisive.

It's this inclusiveness that I love about AboutUs but it isn't easy. There are conflicts on the way but with people like us who want to nurture this fledgling community, I think we are moving in the right direction.

I am so glad you like the Storyteller's Bazaar. It took a while to develop and now I am waiting to see if it grabs peoples imagination enough to start contributing. I love reading stories to my daughter both because of the interaction with her (we talk about what we read) and because I love reading children's stories and it gives me a good excuse to read them. We came across a great set of books by Angie Sage called the Septimus Heap series. There are three books altogether Magyk, Flyte and Physik. We loved reading them and I'm sure your children will too. I'll have a look around for the Wizard of Oz for my daughter. Tanwir Shah

Congratulations!

Dear Mary, Congratulations on being featured on the AboutUs Home page. Tanwir Shah

Regarding ExPrT.com edit

Hi Mduquaine,

I apologize for the edit that was made to the image on ExPrT.com. My intention was to move the anonymous comment "This page is unbelievable!" (the edit) to a new section "Community Reviews". Instead, it seems that the image link you had entered was removed for some reason (Please see the history of the page). I am also glad you caught the error when you did and thank you for correcting me. Hopefully nothing like this will happen again! :)

Take care, Umair Tamim

NewSkin Beta Preview

Hello Mary!

We've noticed your contributions and are glad to be on the AboutUs team with you! As an ActiveMember your energy and ideas determine our future direction. One way that ActiveMembers stay "in the loop" is to participate in the beta previews of large new changes to the site before they are generally released.

Today we're starting a limited beta preview of an earthy NewSkin intended to reflect the alive and growing AboutUs community. The NewSkin is designed to feel wholesome and connected with the real world. This choice was made to reassure the many folks who feel that the internet is a "scary place" where mean people hide behind fake identities and shout insults at each other. We hope that the NewSkin evokes our values in a way that helps visitors and members alike feel grounded in true community.

We'd love your help putting the NewSkin through its paces! To give it a whirl you'll need to be logged in. Once you are logged in, go to "my preferences" | "skin" and select "design". Don't forget to then click the "save" button! You can always go back to the current skin by selecting "aboutus" via the same steps.

Your feedback on the new look for aboutus will help ensure that it has a maximally positive impact when we roll it out. Thanks for being a valuable member of the community, we look forward to your feedback on the NewSkin page!

Warm Regards,
the DevelopmentTeam
