Description

Fred van der Kraaij (1946) was born in Den Bosch, the Netherlands. He obtained a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Tilburg (with honors, 1983). His dissertation on the role of foreign investments in the development of Liberia 1900-1977 was published as “The Open Door Policy of Liberia – An Economic History of Modern Liberia” (Bremen, 1983). He wrote extensively on West Africa where he lived for over 16 years.

Professional data (1970-present): Specialized in political, social and economic development in Africa after a brief specialization on Latin American affairs (1968-75). After a six-month working visit to four Sahelian countries (1972) I resided in West Africa for over 16 years (1975-91). In 1983 I obtained a doctorate (Ph.D.), with distinction, in development economics, on the Open Door Policy and Economic History of Liberia. Between 1991 and 1999 I worked in the Netherlands at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Policy Preparation Section, 1991-95, and the Policy and Operations Evaluation Department. 1995-99) with special assignments in North, Eastern and West Africa. From 1999 till 2001 I was employed by the World Bank, Washington DC, USA, working for the Global Coalition for Africa. As from 2001 I am again employed by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs where I was chief economist for the Africa region before rejoining the Policy and Operations Evaluation Department in 2003. Also, during 1992-98, I taught 'Industrialisation in Sub-Saharan Africa' at the University of Twente, the Netherlands. I published on Africa in general and some countries of Sub-Sahara Africa in particular (see below).
