Liberian Observer

Description

A brief History

The Liberian Observer Corporation was founded by Mr. & Mrs. Kenneth Y. Best in 1981 in Monrovia, Liberia. The Crown Hill office building was home to the newspaper for about a decade. It survived many shut-downs and burn-downs before civil war broke out in 1990, forcing the family to migrate to The Gambia. In The Gambia, Mr. & Mrs. Best started The Gambian Observer in 1991, the first daily newspaper in history of that country. The newspaper enjoyed four successful years of publication in The Gambia. Everyone from the president to policemen and market women read the paper. Those who could not read had their school-aged children read it to them. In 1994, a military coup d'etat took place. When the Daily Observer pressed the new government to set a date for democratic elections, Mr. Best and some of his reporters were arrested, jailed and deported. The Best family sought refuge in the United States until such a time as Liberia, their own country, would return to stability. During that time, the Liberian Observer Online was born. In April 2005, Mr. Best was finally able to return to Liberia to rebuild the newspaper. With God's help, and with the help of many friends, it has been done. We pray that longlasting peace will take up residence in Liberia, and that we will all hold our posts do our part in "the rebuilding of the wall."
