The University of California, Los Angeles popularly known as UCLA was established in the year 1919. It is a public university located in Westwood neighborhood of Los Angeles. The university has a huge campus of approximately 420 acres. The university is currently among the top ten universities of the country. The university has a rich endowment of $1.7 billion which fuels its research activities. Over the years the university has set a benchmark through excellence in education, research and service.

Some of the notable alumni of UCLA include Nobel Laureate Ralph (Peace, 1950), Bruce Merrifield (Chemistry, 1984), Glenn T. Seaborg (Chemistry, 1951), William Sharpe (Economics, 1990). The list also contains main academicians, scientists, artists, musicians, athletes, entrepreneurs, attorneys and politicians.

Reputation

According to the 2007 rankings released by U.S News the university is ranked 26th in the country for undergraduate programs. It is ranked 12th by Newsweek among Top 100 Global Universities.

Number of undergraduate student enrollment is about 27,428. Number of graduate students is about 10,305 and post-graduate about 11,021.The university has15% out of state students. The minority representation in the college is 1% American Indian/Alaskan Native, 31% Asian/Pacific Islander, 4% Black/Non-Hispanic and 13% Hispanic/Latino. The faculty strength is about 3,326.

Student Life

Many students want to live on campus to fully utilize various facilities offered by the university, for that reason the university has a campus hall which easily accommodates 5,627 students providing meal service with a choice of 19 meals per week. Types of residences include Men's residence halls, Married student housing off campus, Honor student residence halls, and Coed residence halls, Sorority houses off campus, Women's residence halls and Fraternity houses off campus. Number of registered organizations is 700; Number of social fraternities is 29, Number of social sororities’ is 18. The university has a campus full of activities which include Academic Clubs, Television Station, Theatre/Drama, Choir, Concert Band, Newspaper, Orchestra, Religious, Sports/Intramurals, Gay and Lesbian, International, Political Activist, Honors/Academic:, Jazz Band, Minority Cultural, Student Government, Marching Band, Phi Beta Kappa, Pre-Medical, Minority Student, Pre-Law, Radio Station, Environmental, Literary Magazine and Yearbook.

Press

The UCLA has a press which caters to students, faculty and outside world. There is a student newspaper by name Daily Bruin bringing the latest news from around the world. It also publishes UCLA today 15 times a year for faculty and staff of UCLA and UCLA magazine is published four times a year, primarily for the alumni of UCLA.
