OurWork (.5) FeaturedContent / WriteBlurbs/December2007.1 (TedErnst)

What

This the actual selecting, writing and posting of blurbs on featured WikiPages. WriteFeaturedBlurbs is a task that is part of Projects:FeaturedContent.

See related tasks: NurtureNominees and ProcessFeaturedNominations for the tasks involving the nomination and encouragement process that leads up to the writing.

Why

Featured WikiPages serves a number of community functions:

  • It provides a way of celebrating cool things and contributions to the wiki
  • It is a way of encouraging and promoting the creation of high quality WikiPages.
  • The featured blurbs themselves often are used as a messaging tool to show and teach users on tricks and techniques that might improve their WikiPages, these can include notes on using photos, adding community reviews and the like.
  • To encourage and teach TheWikiWay by engaging active members in conversations.
  • It provides a dynamic element to the front page, which not only helps inform visitors and get them to return regularly to see what's been featured, it also effect Google rankings by providing regular content and links to pages for Google's spiders to scrape.

DoneDone

  • 4-5 featured blurbs are written during this iteration (approximately 2 a week).

Steps to get to DoneDone

For each "featured blurb" there are several steps require to DoneDone:

  1. Selecting pages to feature -- generally, these are gathered by looking at the Potentials list, although not always. Please see ProcessFeaturedNominations and GrowFeaturedPotentials for the tasks related to this.
  2. Write the blurb. In addition to a headline and the date, the featured blurb needs to end with a link to the "comments" section in the article page (which is created when you put the "Featured Badge" on in a later step). The format/code for this is:
    (View Comments) <br style="clear: both"/>
  3. Create a "featured logo" in OmniGraffle.
  4. Upload image with a summary that says:
#redirect Foo.com
FeaturedImage

  1. Open the previous featured page in a new tab.
  2. Add the new blurb to the Portal:AboutUsFeatureMe page and move the "noincludes" so just today's feature is transcluded. Remove the bottom feature from the page.
  3. Add the featured blurb to http://www.AboutUsWeblog.org
    1. include the logo and the "view comments" line
    2. format the logo with a left-justified and horizontal & vertical borders of 10px.
    3. the title for the web post should be "Featured WikiPage:" and then whatever the headline you wrote.
  4. Copy the featured badge from the previous Featured article into the new feature.
    1. Change the date
    2. Change out the old blurb with the new.
    3. open up the "Featured Discussion" for that page in a new window.
    4. delete the "Featured Discussion" transclusion from the featured article
    5. In the edit summary put FeaturedBadge or similar notifier.
  5. Delete both the "Foo.com/FeaturedDiscussion" page and it's transclusion in the FeatureMePotentials page.

DoneDone is achieved when these steps have been completed 4-5 times for this iteration.
