About Me

Hi, I'm Steven Walling! Here at AboutUs I work to fulfill our goals by providing exceptional content, mostly in the form of coaching and writing about those interested in having AboutUs develop a great wiki page for them. From top to bottom at AboutUs, I find it to be a unique and fascinating endeavor, and I'm elated to be here. Our goal of "a guide to all websites" is both ambitious and necessary. In working with those interested in AboutUs write their DomainPage, I'm living my dream: helping others discover the positive impact of wiki.

Elsewhere on the web, I'm an editor and administrator on the English Wikipedia and other Wikimedia Foundation projects. On Wikipedia, I'm a member of WikiProject Oregon, a group of Wikipedians dedicated to improving content about Oregon. I also write for the project's blog. I've been involved with WikiWednesday, RecentChangesCamp, and UniversalEditButton.org.

Working in more traditional print media, I've written film, literary and performing arts criticism for Willamette Week and The Vancouver Voice. My off-wiki hobbies include Go, Tai Chi, Yoga and backyard chicken keeping (I keep a record of my hen's egg production on the wiki).

edit Why we need AboutUs.org: a case study

AboutYou, AboutMe, AboutHim, AboutHer, AboutIt, AboutThem ... AboutUs!

After reading a great news story by the WCF Courier, I went hunting for some rather basic additional information. I wondered what the full name of the publication was, I wanted to know what region they served, what their distribution numbers where, what their email contact was, etc. It took me 15 minutes of surfing to discover that there was no page with this all of this information on their site. Where could I go next? Other news publications don't do guides to their regional competition, an encyclopedia wouldn't consider a local paper notable, and Google gives me thousands of hits to wade through. The answer: AboutUs. In less than five minutes, I found an accessible rundown of the paper that provided name and contact info in addition to placing the publication in the desired context of its physical location and within its industry. That's the magic of a good DomainPage on AboutUs.

... The most important improvement was the creation of an article for How2BecomeAChristian.info at aboutus.org. ... This will be a great traffic generator as aboutus.org has about 5 million monthly unique viewers looking for sites. It also goes a long way towards getting the site ranked in search engines. Cross connecting and promoting sites is always good.
