Nouveau riche social climbing isn't exactly our idea of a good time. Not unsurprisingly, Wall Street is heavily represented in the nauseating exercise, with Henry Kravis and Bruce Wasserstein sharing column inches with the likes of Stan Druckenmiller, Herb Allen and Leon Black. We suspect Third Point's Daniel Loeb is hanging his head in shame somewhere over the fact that he was dropped from the list in '06. Maybe his wife didn't get enough plastic surgery this year?
MBAs Holding the Cards This Recruiting Season
Freshly-minted MBAs are graduating into the best job market since the last market peak. U Chicago estimates that 2006 grads will pull down 4% more than last year's class, with median starting salaries of around $95,000. What's more, a higher percentage of graduating MBAs already have a job than in past and many received multiple job offers. Things ain't like they were though in the late-90's: "Never again are we going to see the irrational exuberance of the dot-com era," said David A. Wilson, president and CEO of the Graduate Management Admission Council says. "There was nothing real about those salaries or the stock market in those years."
Vegetarians Unlikely To Bid for Lunch With Buffett
If nothing else, the market for lunches with Warren Buffett is proof positive of eBay's value proposition. When Buffett began his annual tradition of auctioning a lunch to raise money for charity, he did so in a live-auction format, generally netting $25,000 to $30,000. Since moving to eBay in 2003, however the take has increased ten-fold, with last year's winning bid topping $350,000. This year's auction will take place later this month. The winner will get to bring along up to seven friends to break bread at New York steak joint Smith & Wollensky.
