History
Charles E. Merrill founded the company under the name Charles E. Merrill & Co. in the year 1914 at 7 Wall Street, New York. In a few months after this, his friend Edmund C. Lynch joined him and the company came to be called as Merrill Lynch & Co. Winthrop H. Smith joined the company in 1916. Smith led the firm successfully from 1940 until his death in 1961. The partnership wanted to acknowledge the wonderful contribution of Smith and therefore included his name in the company’s title getting it as Merrill Lynch, Pierce, Fenner & Smith, Inc in 1958. Until 1970s, the company was called as the Catholic firm of the Wall Street. In 1971, Merrill Lynch went public and thereon emerged as a multinational corporation with client assets worth $1.8 trillion, operating in over 40 countries of the world. In the year 2006, the company had a strong brokerage network of over 15,000. This network is often referred as the “thundering herd”. Merrill Lynch is highly popular for its Global Private Client Services and a fantastic sales force.
