University of Delaware (UD), born in 1743, is a state assisted university, a Land Grant, Sea Grant, Space Grant and Urban Grant University! It is a Research Intensive University.

Campuses and Colleges

University of Delaware has its main campus at Newark Campus. The other campuses / educational and research facilities are located at Wilmington, Dover, Lewes and Georgetown. The entire system stretches over 2,041 acres, with the main Campus accounting for 1172 acres.

In all, the UD, has the following seven departments:

UD offers 126 UG programs, 82 Graduate programs and 39 doctoral programs. UD web site has an alphabetical Academic Programs Listing of all programs in its website which run into several dozens. They include the likes of Air Force ROTC, Art Conservation, Entomology & Wildlife Ecology, Foreign Languages & Literatures, Materials Science & Engineering, Women's Studies etc., in addition to conventional courses like Civil & Environmental Engineering, Economics, Geography, Economics, Physics & Astronomy.

Besides these, the UD offers several inter disciplinary courses like Cognitive Science, Comparative Literature, Environmental Programs, Health Promotion, Legal Studies, Natural Resource Management, Sea Grant College Program, Women's Studies etc.

Student Body

By Fall 2006, UD awarded 3,683 bachelor's degrees, 696 master's degrees, and 222 doctoral degrees. Fall 2006 enrolled a total of 20,380 students, including 15,849 undergraduates, 3,446 graduate students and 1,085 professional and continuing studies students. While 58 % of undergraduates are female, 60% of UG and 68% of graduate students are from other states and 5.6% of UG and 4.6% of graduate students are African-American.

Faculty

UD has 1,117 full-time faculties with over 80% of them holding doctorate or terminal professional degree in their field.

Notable Alumni

Notable alumni of UD has many people like, Charles C. Allen III, the third generation owner of Allen Family foods, T.W. Fraser Russell, Professor of Chemical Engineering, Phyllis Williams Sharps, associate professor and director of the master’s program at Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing, noted for work in domestic violence, particularly with African American women, W. David Sincoskie, Senior Vice President for the Network Systems Research Laboratory at Telcordia Technologies Inc, whose leadership has led to ADSL, ATM and frame relay etc.

Brief History

  • 1833 - Chartered by the State of Delaware.
  • 1914 - A Women's College was opened.
  • 1945 - Became permanently co-educational.

Housing

Almost half of the undergraduates live in UD’s residence halls. There are nine major Residence Halls / Complexes with a capacity of 4,649 and other housing facilities with a capacity of 5,992.

Library and Information Systems

The University of Delaware Library network includes the Morris Library, the main library, three branches in Newark (Agriculture, Chemistry and Physics Libraries) and a fourth branch (Marine Studies) Lewes.

The University of Delaware Library is a depository library for U.S. government publications, a patent depository for U.S. patents. The Morris Library seats over 3,000 persons. The details of collections are as follows:

  • Titles in Databases - over 240
  • Current Journals and newspapers - over 40,000
  • Subject guides to Internet resources - over 105

Sports
