The University of Georgia (UGA) is the oldest, most comprehensive, most diversified and most prominent university in Georgia. UGA is an equal opportunity / affirmative action institution of the state.

With a status of land-grant and sea-grant institution, UGA offers bachelor’s, master's, doctoral degrees in the arts, social sciences, biological sciences, physical sciences, agricultural sciences and veterinary medicine, business, *environmental sciences, family and consumer sciences, journalism and mass communication, education, law etc.

Campuses and Colleges

The UGA’s main campus is located in Athens, Georgia, over 605 acres with 313 buildings. Its other campuses cover 4,308 acres in Clarke County. It has a total of 43,261 acres under its possession throughout the state.

Student Body

It draws students both nationally and internationally, apart from within Georgia. As it offers the state's widest range of choices in graduate and professional education, UGA has a large predominantly Georgian undergraduate student body which consists of students freshly admitted as well as students transferred from other colleges of Georgian University System. A large minority of the student body is also made up of post-baccalaureate students. Besides, a small number of international students are also admitted. Enrollment for fall, 2005 touched 33,660, the second-highest in UGA history. The SAT average of 1241 is 248 points above the state average and 213 points above the national average.

Since inception in 1993, the total HOPE Scholarship disbursals touched $505 million by 2005, over a total of 67,617 UGA students.

UGA’ s alumini has many prominent persons of America. Robert Benham, first African-American chief justice of Georgia Supreme Court, A.D., Sec. of State, Georgia, Cathy Cox, John Huey, Editor-in-Chief of Time, Inc., Charlayne Hunter-Gault, international journalist and Deborah Roberts, ABC News producer and correspondent to name a few.

Faculty

UGA is 8th in total number of African American faculty, which includes both tenure-line and non-tenure-line faculty. Dr. Edward J. Larson, professor of history and law, won the Pulitzer Prize for history in 1998 for his book “Summer for the Gods: The Scopes Trial and America's Continuing Debate Over Science and Religion”

Many in-service, retired or deceased faculty members of UGA have served in the prestigious national level institutions like National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, Institute of Medicine, American Academy of Arts and Sciences etc.

Fourteen internationally known experts are in the UGA’s faculty as eminent scholars under the Georgia Research Alliance scheme, including the likes of Clifton Baile, expert in the molecular bases of energy balance, regulation and growth, Jeffrey Bennetzen, molecular geneticist specializing in plant genetics, Stephen Dalton, researcher on embyronic stem cells, Vasu Nair, an expert on drug molecules against viruses, Steven Stice, trans-genetics expert and Ying Xu, bioinformatics expert etc.

Best Programs

UGA's undergraduate and graduate programs in landscape architecture are ranked 1st and 3rd by Design Intelligence, a publication of the American Society of Landscape Architects.

The graduate program in ecology ranked 8th by the U.S. News & World Report. Terry College’s MBA program was rated 46th among 350 accredited MBA programs in U.S. by the same publication.

A ranking by Forbes Magazine that measures return on investment for MBA degrees, rate the Terry program in the top 50 nationally and 18th among programs at public institutions.

Terry College MBA program has won many reputable rankings given by the likes of Business Week, Wall Street Journal, The Financial Times of London and many professional associations.

The graduate program in public relations in the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication is ranked 4th nationally by U.S. News & World Report. The graduate programs in advertising and radio/television in the same college are ranked 5th and 12th respectively.

The School of Public and International Affairs’ graduate program in Public affairs, came 3rd in about 240 programs; the graduate program in number theory in the mathematics department is ranked 10th ; the graduate program in the College of Education is ranked 21st among more than 180 programs, all nationally, as per U.S. News & World Report.

Brief History

University of Georgia was incorporated by an act of the Georgia state General Assembly, on January 27, 1785 making it, the first state-supported university in America. Actually, the university was established only in 1801 when a committee of the board of trustees selected a 633 acres site of on the banks of River Oconee in northeast Georgia. It all begun with the construction of Franklin College, what is now known as Old College, Now, UGA is body of fifteen colleges and schools teaching the university’s different programs of teaching, research, and service. The university’s first batch completed graduation in 1804.

High Points of UGA

The University of Georgia (UGA) is home of Georgia’s State Botanical Garden, State Museum of Art, State Museum of Natural History and also home for the Georgia Writers Hall of Fame.

It is the home of the annual Peabody Awards (given for excellence in television and radio news, entertainment and children’s programming) and annual Delta Prize for Global Understanding (given for promoting peace and cooperation among cultures and nations).

It has one of the America’s largest and most comprehensive public service and outreach programs conducted by an educational institution.

Two of the early leaders of the University of Georgia, Abraham Baldwin and William Few later signed the United States Constitution on behalf of Georgia at the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, Pa., in 1787.

With a total of $159.4 million in research awards, grants and contracts during fiscal year 2005, UGA ranks first in America in total spending for research and development among universities without either a medical school or an engineering school.

UGA has got the following ranks among US universities: 19th - U.S. News & World Report’s 2005 list of the 50 top public universities in America.

6th - Kiplinger's magazine among public colleges and universities for “Best Values”

UGA is 9th among 345 public and private colleges on the Princeton Review’s “Best Academic Bang for your Buck” list. The rankings are based on an analysis of academic and cost-related factors.

UGA’s HOPE Scholarship, which covers tuition costs and received by more than 90% in-state first-year students, earned fame to the University as one of nine “unbeatable deals” nationwide, ranked by Money Magazine.

16th - as per The Wall Street Journal 8th - in the number of students studying abroad. UGA is one of 30 institutions in the U.S. to be designated a Sea Grant College.

Centers of Excellence (Special Mention)

  • The Complex Carbohydrate Research Center, established in 1985 is the first such facility in the world.
  • UGA has the America’s first center to monitor changes in levels of ultraviolet light.

Library and Information Systems

The University library network is ranked 31st among the 113 research libraries with more than 4 million volumes as per the Association of Research Libraries. It boasts of one of the largest map collections in the United States the original Constitution of the Confederate States of America. Besides, UGA has a computing and information system facilities on par with the best in America.

Sports

UGA provides excellent facilities for sports. UGA athletic teams have won 25 national championships, in women’s gymnastics, women’s swimming and diving, women’s tennis, football, women’s equestrian, golf, baseball etc.

UGA also ranks 9th among the top 20 research universities in the number of students studying abroad with a figure of 1,400 UGA undergraduates. Though, a state university, Private giving to UGA scaled record high of $96.9 million in fiscal year 2005.

Rated as the nation’s best such facility, the Bernard B. and Eugenia A. Ramsey Student Center for Physical Activities, spread across 425,000-square-foot, is one of the largest and best fitness facility for students and faculty in America. It has gymnasia, recreational and competition swimming pools, racquetball courts, a volleyball gymnasium, weight training rooms, dance studios and concert seating.

Press

UGA has a university press and brings out Georgia Review, a famous quarterly literary journal. It publishes many books and other academic content.
