- I believe it was Plato who argued that "those who tell the stories rule society" and perhaps the most important place that stories are told is in history textbooks read by students. With the Iraq war well into its third year, we can expect that soon, history textbooks will begin publishing a version of the conflict but based on Vietnam it is unlikely American children will be taught anything even approaching a critical truth. Like Vietnam, the national division created by the Iraq conflict will preclude honest analysis and whatever the military or political outcome, the writers will probably scrub criticism in favor of highlighting America's moral high ground in advocating global freedom.
