Shawn Christopher Shea, M.D. has been a dynamic force in the field of mental health for years. Recognized nationally as a preeminent leader in suicide prevention and clinical interviewing, he is now the Director of the Training Institute for Suicide Assessment and Clinical Interviewing. Dr. Shea graduated summa cum laude from Duke University in 1976. He received his M.D. from the School of Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1980. He then went on to complete his residency training at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic at the University of Pittsburgh in 1984.

An entertaining and highly acclaimed speaker, Dr. Shea has been awarded the Outstanding Course Award from the American Psychiatric Association. He has been a frequent presenter at the prestigious Cape Cod Summer Symposia where, in 1999, his course received the highest evaluation of the thirty courses presented over the summer - a score that remains one of the highest in the twenty year history of the symposia. One of the most popular speakers in mental health today, he presents over 100 workshops a year. In addition to his Cape Cod presentations, other prestigious venues have included the Santa Fe Symposia, the Door County Summer Institute, and the Muskoka Summer Seminar Series sponsored by McMaster University.

He is the author of Psychiatric Interviewing: the Art of Understanding, 2nd Edition, which is a perennially best-selling text for W. B. Saunders, Inc. In their first years of publication, both the first and second editions were honored by being chosen by the Medical Library Association for the Brandon/Hill List as one of the 16 most important books in the field of psychiatry. His next book The Practical Art of Suicide Assessment by John Wiley & Sons, Inc., first published in 1999 and more recently released as an expanded paperback in 2002, is considered a modern classic in the field of suicidology.
