There are 135 news services in Washington, D.C. More than 500 newspapers have bureaus. In all, 6,600 journalists have press passes to cover Congress. We figure the world does not need another Washington-based wire service that covers the story of the day.

We do not cover press conferences or congressional hearings or other set-piece events. Newspapers can choose from dozens of stories covering today's presidential press conference. What papers don't have are many choices of thoughtful, deeply reported stories about national issues that affect readers.

That's our role. We cover issues: cyberspace and technology; race and immigration; generations; money and work; health and science; values and philanthropy; national security; the American identity; and national politics.
