On October 8-9, nearly 150 students, urban missionaries, and area church leaders met on Westminster’s Philadelphia campus for this year’s student missions conference on “Contextualizing without Compromising: A Case Study in Reaching the Hip Hop Culture.” Presented jointly by Westminster’s Student Missions Fellowship, Rock Soul Ministries, and Cross Movement Ministries, Inc., the conference theme honed in on one of the Seminary’s core values, the “development of culturally sensitive, theologically competent ministers.”

Professor John Leonard opened the event with an address titled “Can Rap be Redeemed?” (listen to the message here). He reminded his audience of the words of former Professor of Urban Mission Harvie Conn, who said, “Contextualization is the art of planting the gospel seed in culturally diverse soils without also planting the flower pot.”
