- My parents had started a small military surplus store in 1955 in Ames, Iowa. Growing up we spent countless hours waiting for my parents as we traveled around the country visiting every military surplus store from coast to coast. I guess they sold a few things, but it always seemed to us kids that they spent forever talking with the various proprietors. Or more often that not, buying some odd collection of products that crowded the car or filled the ever present trailer we were pulling. Over the years my parents amassed a collection of field gear, electronics and oddities that was like no other.
