Brief History & Recognition
Indiana University was founded in the year 1820, on January 20th when the legislative act adopted the establishment of a state seminary. In the same year in the month of July the location for the seminary was chosen by the Board of Trustees. In the year 1823 Baynad Rush Hall was hired as the first professor to teach in the seminary and the classes initially began with a meager ten students in the year 1824.the Indiana college building was built in 1838 and in the same year the legislative act accepted to change the name Indiana College to Indiana University. Arbutus, the campus magazine was for the first time published in the year 1894. In its journey till today the University has also gone through a series of ups and downs, but it has always bounced back becoming stronger and efficient. The awarding of its first honorary doctorate on former student and winner of the Pulitzer award Earnie Pyle was one of its glorious moments. James Watson another alumni of Indiana University became the youngest Nobel laureate for his discovery of the structure of DNA along with two others in the year 1962.another of its aluminums Steve Tesich won an Oscar in 1978 for his screenplay in the movie Breaking Away which was filmed on campus. There are various other examples from the University's history to justify the growth of the Indiana University into an elite educational institution.
