Hillbilly Housewife

Description

My publicist (read sister) has been after me to write up a bit about myself and so I am complying with her wishes. Let me introduce myself, I'm Maggie, owner and creator of the Hillbilly Housewife. The HBHW site has been on the web since 1999. It began as a place for me to store my recipes so I could access them easily and organize them so they weren't all stashed in a box under my bed. As things turned out, other folks have enjoyed my recipes too.

My recipes and articles have appeared in several publications and are linked to all over the web. A few of these include: Ladies Against Feminism, The Dollar Stretcher, FamilyResources.com, The Crossville Chronicle, Walton Feed, Budget 101, and many others. Nutritionists, College Professors and Home Economists frequently write me with questions or asking for advice on specific principles of low-cost cooking. I've even had newspaper folks contact me for my opinion on pop-culture things like what I think about "Desperate Housewives" (never seen it), Martha Stewart (her new show will flop) or the current trend towards women staying home instead of working outside the home (it's a good thing). Over the years I've become something of an expert on low-cost cooking and the gentle art of homemaking, mostly due to necessity. I've been published in local magazines, and poetry journals. For 18 months I also had a monthly column in a church newsletter with a publication rate of about 5000. It ended when I realized the church had a few details I couldn't live with (like doubting the divinity of Jesus), so I had to find another place to worship.

I'm 36 at the time of this writing. Fred and I have been married for 18 years. We have 2 daughters from his first marriage. One of whom is pregnant (yay, I get to be a grandma!) and one of whom is married (yay! I get to be a mother-in-law). Our boys are 9 and almost 13 and we live in a small shack in the South-Western region of Virginia. We have 2 fat dogs and 4 fat cats, 2 of which are kittens. We homeschool and are currently looking for a good church, so if you know of any, please share. I dress modestly and wear a headcovering and we prefer Baptist churches, although we are not set on that point completely.
