The Science Of Smoking: How Smell Works

You can usually smell a cigar before you taste it - as it comes out of the plastic wrap or burns to life under the steady application of a torch lighter. In fact, if you couldn't smell it, you might not be able to taste it, as the sense of smell is more basic and more powerful in the human body than the sense of taste. Without it, we'd be able to pick up a few flat tastes from any given cigar; with it, the experience is made immeasurably richer, thanks to the sense of smell's great power. Here we investigate some of the science of smell - a topic in which any dedicated cigar smoker has a lively interest, whether she or he knows it or not!

Smell is one of the few topics of scientific interest where the really, really old theory has turned out to be, largely, right. A century before Christ, the great Roman poet-philosopher Lucretius suggested that maybe we "pick up" smells from the air because the shapes of molecules differ so widely. Different shapes stimulate the nose differently, and cause different kinds of sensations in the brain. Well, Nobel Prize winners Linda Buck and Richard Axel recently showed that Lucretius (who didn't have the benefit of labs or microscopes or, well, modern science generally) was basically right: molecules that receive odors are made to receive only one molecular feature, or one kind of odor molecule. So it is true that different receptors are made for detecting, in essence, different kinds of odors.

This explains why human beings have, in comparison to some animals, a weak sense of smell: while we have (according to current guesstimates) hundreds of different types of olfactory receptors, dogs and cats have thousands. More dedicated receptors equals more kinds of smells, more fine differentiations, more "grains" of variation among smells. Animals' powers of smell make ours appear brutal and unsubtle. Smell is like taste - using either, you can't sense an object without it becoming a part of you. When an object is smelled, its molecules actually bind themselves to your smell receptors, which is why it's harder to smell in some conditions.

In any case, smell seems to have a tighter hold on our emotions and memories than the other senses. Mental illness and age can erase the visual memories of important landmarks or loved ones; touch can seem generalized (judged apart from its mental and emotional context, one kiss might feel much like another). Taste is practically neutered apart from smell: drink a glass of strong wine during a head cold, say some researchers, and you'll taste water. But smell can remind people even of memories they haven't consciously thought of in years: the weird fertilizer your neighbor used on his lawn; the cleaning chemicals of your first grown-up apartment; the odd flower near the house of the aunt you lived with one long-ago summer; the popcorn at your first favorite movie theatre.

This emotional potency may stem from smell's role in evolution: it enables the ability to detect certain kinds of predators while they're still, luckily, too far away to taste or touch, and hidden skillfully where the eye can't penetrate. It seems to have a tighter link to the nervous system, so as to make those quick responses possible. Smell a predator? Run!

That power has, more recently, offered manufacturers some commercial possibilities that they're just beginning to exploit. The Hershey's store in New York City is full of chocolate fragrance, which, according to studies, renders people more docile, puts them in a better mood, and makes them readier to buy. (Someone needed to do a study to figure that out?) Other studies have found that strangers who ask for change in a bakery-scented place tend to get better results than at neutrally-scented locations. And, of course, one of the benefits of shopping for cigars is the opportunity to hang out in cigar stores, where the softly leathery smell makes for an enticing smoking experience long before lighter ever meets tip.

$200,000 Worth of Cigars To Be Donated to U.S. Overseas Troops

Troy, MI April 20, 2008 -- Military troops serving in Iraq and at other overseas bases will be receiving a special care package: 2,900,000 cigars worth more than $200,000. What began as one man's simple act of kindness has grown into a coordinated effort to send a donation of cigars to overseas troops.

Last month in Michigan, Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard announced he was sending 1,500 confiscated, counterfeit cigars to the troops rather than incinerate them. The county's Narcotics Enforcement Team seized the stogies, valued at $15,000, during a traffic stop of a convicted drug felon in January.

Dan Jenuwine, of CigarFox.com, cringed at the thought of troops smoking counterfeit cigars. Upon investigation, it was determined the cigars were not long filled premiums, but rather contained cheap chopped tobacco and fillers. Jenuwine organized a deal with Altadis USA and General Cigar Company, makers of Montecristo, Romeo & Juliet, Cohiba, and Partigas cigars. The companies agreed to replace the confiscated counterfeits with 100 percent genuine long fill cigars. The Sheriff in turn agreed to incinerate the counterfeit cigars.

In addition, CigarFox.com made a donation of 1,700 additional cigars to be sent along with Sheriff Bouchard's cigars from Altadis USA and General Cigar Company to the troops abroad. These cigars were packaged for shipment on April 8, 2008 at the Oakland County Sheriff's Department. Sheriff Bouchard and members of his staff along with assistance from CigarFox.com employees carefully packed the cigars along with humidification packets for shipment.

The efforts of CigarFox.com also garnered a generous donation from Renegade Tobacco of North Carolina. The company donated more than 400 cases of Hombre Little cigars.

While Sheriff Bouchard's 3,700 cigars are already en route to the troops, CigarFox is attempting to coordinate the effort to get the donation of Hombre Little cigars to the troops. Anyone interested in assisting with the logistics and cost of the delivery of these donated cigars can contact .

"Let us never forget what these brave young men and women do for us each and every day to preserve our freedom," said Jenuwine. He also praised Sherrif Bouchard for taking the position to do something good for our troops instead of just destroying the product.

Jenuwine also stated the he realizes that some special interest groups may find the donation of cigars in poor taste. He indicated that this is truly a matter of opinion because over the past years, he personally has sent thousands of cigars to the troops. From the infantry to Special Forces like the Navy Seals, the donations have been warmly received and he has received nothing but messages of appreciation from the recipients. Jenuwine suggests that if anyone thinks differently they should just ask an active military person returning from Iraq or Afghanistan what they think about receiving the donation of cigars.

  • Matt Sunderlin (delighted) : I'm not sure what foxes have to do with tobacco products, but considering that the logo's not half bad (I've seen worse) and that cigars are less distasteful than cigarettes (though not by much), I'd be willing to suffer this website's existence without undue fuss. 09:21, 6 August 2008 (PDT)
