What are the sources of blood cholesterol?

- a DIETARY source, which refers to the cholesterol ingested through the foods we eat. - a DE NOVO source, a person's liver does synthesize cholesterol.

Since diet and metabolic synthesis are the sources, two methods are used to control or manage high blood cholesterol levels.

- DIETARY, ideal when the problem is minor and due mainly to deficient eating habits and lifestlyle. - MEDICATION, such as the statin group of drugs, the use of these may be necessary when the high cholesterol levels are due to metabolic, genetic or “familial” factors. Familial hypercholesterolemia is an example.

Most clinical conditions are due to a combination of both these factors.

Since High LDL-Cholesterol levels are the necessary precursor to Atherosclerosis, which leads to the development of coronary heart disease and ensuing heart attack, a patient who has been diagnosed with hypercholesterolemia (high blood cholesterol levels) would be well advised to acquire a good knowledge of cholesterolemia. For that purpose, the hM Cholesterol Chronicles have posted a page entitled “What is Cholesterol”, the page is based on institutional (or academic) scientific and medical sources. References to useful medical papers are provided for further reading.
