Company History

Air products found its beginnings in 1940 in Detroit with the efforts of late Leonard P. Pool, who had an innovative idea of on-site concept of producing and selling industrial gasses, especially oxygen. He attempted to find an alternative to heavy containers that weighed five times more than the gas. He proposed building oxygen gas generating facility near commercial users of oxygen, pipe it for all their needs and thereby reduce the distribution costs. The company began leasing its oxygen generator to a small steel company in Detroit in the year 1941. Following quite lucrative orders, the company was invited to supply oxygen for the use of military personnel in high-altitude flights. Moving to Chattanooga, Tennessee, the company produced about 240 oxygen generators. On termination of the military contract, the company shifted its attention to commercial markets by setting up operations close to the industrial markets of the northeast.

In 1950s, the company started producing tonnage quantities of liquid oxygen and nitrogen and championed the supplying of gas over the fence to customers on a take-or-pay basis for the first time in the industry. A series of innovations and acquisitions followed. In 1980s, the company entered Korea, Japan, Malaysia, Hong Kong, the People's Republic of China, Thailand, and Taiwan. Besides this, the company also expanded its polymer and polyvinyl related productions.

In 1980s, the company expanded in the areas of power generation, air pollution control, and energy recovery from solid waste. In 1990s, the company expanded in Italy, Asia, Singapore and Indonesia, Korea and Japan and championed the production of a variety of gas and chemical products to semiconductor. This period brought potential growth to the company and recently, the company went for the divestiture of its polyvinyl alcohol business and most of our U.S. packaged gas business.

In addition to this, with the acquisition of American Homecare Supply (AHS) in 2002, the company also entered U.S. homecare business. The company thus started providing home medical services to more than 275,000 patients in 14 countries from more than 200 locations. With the acquisition of Sanwa Chemical of Japan, the company broadened its position in epoxy chemicals in Asia.
