Karl von Linde’s founded the company in the year 1907 by the name Linde Air Products Company in Cleveland, Ohio. The company was the first to produce oxygen from air through a cryogenic process. The company trades under the symbol TX on the NYSE. The primary products of the company include atmospheric gases, such as oxygen, nitrogen, argon, and rare gases; and process gases, such as carbon dioxide, helium, hydrogen, electronic gases, specialty gases, and acetylene. Praxair also designs, engineers, and builds equipment that produces industrial gases. It also supplies surface coatings including wear-resistant and high-temperature corrosion-resistant metallic and ceramic coatings, and powders to aircraft, printing, textile, plastics, primary metals, petrochemical, and other industries. In addition, the company manufactures electric arc, plasma, and high velocity oxygen fuel spray equipment, as well as arc and flame wire equipment used for the application of wear resistant coatings. It serves industries, such as healthcare and petroleum refining; computer-chip manufacturing and beverage carbonation; fiber-optics and steel making; and aerospace, chemicals, and water treatment etc.

The History

1895 – Karl von Linde develops cryogenic liquefier

1902 – Von Linde builds his first Oxygen production plan

1904 – Establishes the first plant ever to produce nitrogen

1907 – Karl von Linde establishes Linde Air Products Company in Cleveland, Ohio

1911 - Starts talk with Union Carbide which manufactures Calcium Carbide.

1917 – The company merges with National Carbon Co., Inc., Prest-O-Lite Co., Inc., Electro Metallurgical Co. and Union Carbide to form one entity called Union Carbide and Carbon Corporation.

1940’s – Linde participates in Union Carbide’ effort in the development of atomic bomb, the company reorganizes

1950’s and 1960’s – Goes global and retains the position of America’s Top Producer of Industrial Gases.

1970’s – Receives tremendous boost due to the energy crisis of 70’s as people started using oxy-fuel as an alternative to traditional fuels

1980’s – Company’s progress is marred due to financial, environmental and human disasters by parent company Union carbide including the sad Bhopal, India gas tragedy in December 1984 as a result the company suffers massive losses, company also begins divestment. Although by early 1980’s Linde’s sales contributed about a billion dollar annually and by the end of the decade the company became the second largest producer of nitrogen and hydrogen.

1992 – The company spins off from Union Carbide and forms Praxair, Inc.

1994 – Praxair earns ISO 9002 certification

1996 – Acquires CBI subsidiary Liquid Carbonic, the world leader in carbon dioxide valued at over $2.2 billion

1998 – Sales reach $4.83 billion

1999 – Praxair stops using the Linde Name that has been used since 1895

2000 – In late 2000 company closed several plants and laid off 750 employees

2001 – The company lays off more employees in late 2001 due to global recession

2002 – Plans to build 2 new hydrogen plans
