- In Third Line Medicine: Modern Treatment for Persistent Symptoms, Melvyn R. Werbach, M.D. divided mainstream medical care into two categories. He called primary care First Line Medicine and specialty care Second Line Medicine. Although he argued for a reorientation of all of modern medicine to bring it back to the principles established by the ancient Greek physician Hippocrates, he suggested that a practical course of action at present would be to establish Third Line Medicine as a new medical discipline. Third Line Medicine, according to Dr. Werbach, would be directed toward third line patients, namely people who had failed to benefit from First and Second Line Medicine. It would employ Hippocrates’ multicausal model of illness, negate the mind/body split and focus on reasonably safe, low-technology healing procedures - especially natural methods of healing. The logo of Third Line Press, Inc. symbolizes Third Line Medicine. It consists of the Greek number three with the snakes of the Caduceus, the symbol of the medical profession, wrapped around the third line of the number.
