Funded through the National Institute of Health, the Model Education Networks To Optimize Rural Science (MENTORS) project aims to recruit and prepare the next generation of basic, translational and clinical cancer researchers. MENTORS focuses on rural and underserved high schools and provides onsite field experiences, job shadows and paid summer internships to allow students to interact with biomedical research scientists. These on site activities are designed to provide students with the opportunity to learn about science and research careers, gain hands on experience and identify mentors and role models. The Mentors Project also supports the development of classroom activities that stimulate student interest by integrating science and Career and Technical Education (CTE), thereby demonstrating the connection between science concepts and their "real world" application.
