The Software Industry Awards were conceived to honor some of the best software available from MicroISVs on the internet. The SIAF also created and coordinates the "Software Industry Awards Foundation People's Choice Awards" which are voted on by the general public. To honor those who have made particularly significant contributions to the software industry, the SIAF created the "Software Hall Of Fame" and the Software Industry Award for Lifetime Achievements. All of these awards are intended to honor the people and products that are part of the MicroISV industry.

The Software Industry Awards Foundation (SIAF) is not affiliated with any other organization. A common misconception is that the SIAF and the Association of Shareware Professionals are in some way related, but this is not so. The SIAF recognized early on that the annual conference was an ideal place for things to happen. For that reason, many different activities take place during the Software Industry Conference. The Association of Shareware Professionals holds its annual luncheon, as does the Educational Software Cooperative. So, while the SIAF recognizes and works with the various trade organizations, and companies, it is not associated with any of them.
