Local Outreach

The local outreach project was spawned from a need to develop community on AboutUs. As part of a larger effort on this behalf, the local outreach project centers on finding existing communities that need a forum for collaboration and communication. The idea is to latch on to the energy of these communities and provide them with the venue and support they need to grow. A mutually beneficial relationship.

Portland

Given the location of our office and the general social/web environment in the NW, Portland is the most logical starting point for this effort.

Work Group

ChrisBabson, WardCunningham, and all staff members (particularly for the brainstorm phase)

Actionable Tasks

  • Listen - brainstorm a list of Portland communities that could benefit by using our site to collaborate and communicate more efficiently
  • Cull - shorten the brainstormed list to the 5 most feasible options (remember to include why they, in particular, have a place at AboutUs)
  • Contact - get in touch with these 5 groups and attempt to arrange meetings or further interaction. Offer to build a preliminary model for them with their own native content.
  • Develop & Communicate - facilitate the instatement and growth of these communities at AboutUs
  • Reflect - ask them how the process is going and what could make things work better for them. Examine our own learning through the process

Timeline

We should be well on the way to making and culling a list to 5 by the end of August '07. Ideally, we will have made all preliminary contacts by this time.

Acceptance Test

We've followed our top 5 (top 10, really) community contacts to their conclusion. This means either 1) a community has taken hold and is sustaining itself (with minimal effort on our part), or 2) the work we've done has failed to take hold.
