The Hilton Hotel has its headquarters based at Beverly Hills, California in the United States, and is one of the largest chains of hotels in the world today. Hilton is the brand of the Hilton Hotels Corporation. The UK and the US based Hilton Hotels had separated from each other way back in 1966. The United Kingdom Hilton chain of hotels was acquired by the Hilton Group plc in 1987. Conrad Hilton founded the Hilton Hotel in 1919. He first bought the Mobley Hotel in Cisco, Texas, in 1919. Gradually his business expanded, and in 1930, Conrad Hilton opened his first high-rise Hilton Hotel in El Paso, Texas. Presently this hotel has been renamed as Plaza Hotel. With further expansion of business, the Hilton Hotels bought the Statler Hotel Chain in 1954. Thus it became the largest chain of Hotels in the entire world. As the business grew, the Hilton became the first international hotel chain. This was the time when the Caribe Hilton Hotel in San Juan, Puerto Rico was opened, which has the very popular destination for all kinds of tourists, and it is the room no.2, where John Lennon and Yoko Ono held their honeymoon as bed-in-peace, in protest against the war, promoting peace during March 1969.

The US private equity firm Blackstone Group has now taken over the Hilton Hotels Corporation, through a merger agreement. The deal is worth $26 billion, and under this deal, the Blackstone will acquire all the outstanding common stock of Hilton for $47.50 per share. Hilton’s net income in 2006 was $572 million on revenue of $8.16 billion. The financial support for the deal is provided by the Bear Stearns, Bank of America Corp, Deutsche Bank AG, Morgan Stanley and Goldman together.
In terms of property, the Hilton is the world’s largest hotel group. It is however not the largest in terms of rooms. The Intercontinental Hotel Group is larger in that respect. Hilton is the second largest chain in the US, after the Marriott International Inc. In 2006, the US Hilton merged with its sister company, Hilton International in the UK, in a $6 billion deal. The sister company split off Ladbrokes, the UK bookmaker, which became a stand-alone company. Now with the takeover by the Blackstone, it will be a part of one of the world’s largest enterprises.
