engagement

Engagement speaks to how much value (fun and utility) people get from the site. The more value they get the more time the spend on the site, the more they return to the site, the more they link to the site. Engagement is a measure of how deep people dive when they visit the site.

One useful way of classifying types of engagement is to consider how many people are reached by our effort.

  • OneToOne Engagement is where one community member makes an effort that connects with one other person. Welcoming is a classic example of OneToOne Engagement. One person writes a message that welcomes one other person.
  • OneToMany Engagement is where one community member makes an effort that connects with many other people. AboutUsVideos are a great example of OneToMany Engagement. One person (or a small group) creates a video that thousands of other folks watch.
  • Viral Engagement is where nobody from the community has to make an effort to connect to many other people. This is the most difficult kind of engagement to spark, but by far the most valuable. I'm not sure that we have a good example of this on AboutUs yet so I'll make up a potential kind of Viral Engagement. We roll out the InfluenceUs wizard widely and now people begin to use it to write messages to other people. The new people then write messages to other new people. The number of people writing InfluenceUs messages grows without us having to ask people to write them.
