Duck Duck Go

Duck Duck Go is a new search engine which claims to provide users with better results and less garbage as compared to its competitors. The unique and catchy name along with innovative solutions means that if Duck Duck Go can deliver on promises this might just turn out to be the future of searches.

The following important characteristics make Duck Duck Go a winner:

• Zero-click information that is summaries & related topics incorporated in the search results.
• Ambiguous keyword detection. Click here to see what happens when you search for "apple"
• Official sites labeled & on top.
• Simpler, less-cluttered links.

Improvements Over Other Search Engines

Blocks 42 Million useless Web sites (with nothing but ads), e.g. yotube.com, facebok.com, etc. Also helps you use Duck Duck Go, a new search engine with less garbage and better results. Our search engine omits these parked/spam domains and provides suggestions when blocking them, e.g. 'Did you mean youtube.com?'. Our add-on should not slow down Firefox (it checks domains in parallel) and has a strict privacy policy that is as least intrusive as possible (e.g. no IPs logged). Help us fight typosquatting!

More improvements:

   * Omit those spam sites you find in other results.
   * Category pages, e.g. Communication disorders.
   * Keyboard shortcuts: ↑ ↓, Enter (go), j k (arrow alts.), and / (search box).
   * Detects phone, tracking, car #s; zip, book, product codes; street and IP addresses.
   * Random passwords, calculations, and your IP.
   * Last visited link highlighted (when you click back).
   * Site icons next to results.

Long Description

Our toolbar currently does two things. First, it helps you more easily use our search engine, Duck Duck Go. For more info about us, please check out http://duckduckgo.com/about.html

Second, our toolbar saves you from 42 Million useless Web sites! We define useless Web sites as sites with nothing but ads. If you're like most people, you've been to many of them from either search results in other search engines or by slightly mistyping Web addresses, e.g. yotube.com, facebok.com, turbotx.com, twitterr.com, arthritis-expert.com, etc.

At best, these sites are a complete waste of time. At worst, they involve pop-ups, scams, and who really knows what else? Anyway, our toolbar saves you from them. Check out the preview pictures for some examples.

We partnered with the Parked Domains Project to develop this toolbar, which is a project that identifies parked/spam domains. These blocked domains have also been removed from our search results. For the full list of sites blocked, check out their Web site at http://www.ivegotafang.com/

When you go to a blocked site, a block page comes up where you can choose to go back, proceed anyway, or search. In addition, our search engine provides alternate site suggestions where available (as shown in the preview pictures), e.g. 'Did you mean youtube.com?' instead of yotube.com.

If you proceed anyway to a blocked domain, that decision is remembered and it will no longer be blocked (during that browser session). You can also report a blocked site as useful (i.e. a false positive), at which point the toolbar will ask if you if you want to add an exception for that domain. If you add an exception then that domain will no longer be blocked, even across browser sessions.

There are preferences (shown in a preview picture) where you can add additional domains to block or specify domains to never block. You can also change the function key that auto-hides/shows the toolbar. Finally, there is a button you can use to report useless Web sites that are not blocked (labeled 'Report Useless Site'), which helps us and The Parked Domains Project improve the blocking system.
