</p><p>What stands out clearly today is the powerful alliance of science, technology, and business which has created a global culture whose primary principles are based on prediction, control, innovation, management, and expansion. Underlying these principles are rationality and power, which Francis Bacon championed as the path to understanding nature and using that knowledge to liberate humanity from bondage. This strategy has worked extraordinarily well. We do indeed have the means to liberate all human beings from hunger and poverty, with the production of wealth and goods achieved through the application of scientific knowledge and the expansion engine that drives capitalism. However, things have not worked out quite as predicted....
