- In October 2005, the WikiVan travelled from Seattle to San Diego for the first WikiSym with several intrepid souls. When we got into the van, we didn't all know each other, but we knew we had a lot of work to do. We decided to do a rolling open space in the van (sessions were 'announced' on post-it notes on the dashboard). By the time we got out of the van in San Diego we were all good friends, and all so into Open Space that we did our best to bring it to WikiSym (putting invitations on the walls and convening sessions in the lobby). WikiSym organizers and other attendees were intrigued and wanted to know how to add some open space to WikSym (and have incorporated it into Wiki Syms since then). After the last workshop, about a dozen people were talking about how the logistics would work with open space at WikiSym and Eugene Kim, in true wiki - and Open Space - spirit, suggested that if we wanted an Open Space conference on wiki, we should just organize one ourselves. We agreed on Portland, OR in Feb '06 (just 4 months away!) and Ward Cunningham committed to being there.
