In 1979, a prominent Chicago Magazine article chronicled the sad state of the Chicago River and asserted that the River was friendless. But the River did have friends. Later that year, people committed to revitalizing the Chicago River began to meet and formed Friends of the Chicago River. Friends was then incorporated in 1988. In 21 years, Friends has grown from that dedicated group of volunteers to a nonprofit organization with over 1,600 dues-paying members, a strong reputation as a leader of collaborative efforts, and a growing list of tangible accomplishments. Friends provided vital leadership in the passage of the City of Chicago’s first River-edge development ordinance in the form of an amendment to the city zoning code in 1988 which has been amended twice since then. In addition, Friends and the City co-authored the award-winning Chicago River Urban Design Guidelines which established a framework for the redevelopment of the River downtown and creation of a Riverwalk. These guidelines were the starting block for the City of Chicago River Corridor Plan, which was adopted for the entire River within the City in 1999. Together, the Ordinance and guidelines have added hundreds of acres to the region’s open space inventory and made a more beautiful River.
