Looking for a Christian Aupair?

An “Aupair” is someone that can help with light housework and some childcare. However, some host families would prefer a Christian Aupair.

“Aupair” means “to the equal”, and the au pair is considered an equal to those in the family; she is not a domestic servant, and thus not subject to rules regarding them, nor may she be required to wear uniform. However, as per the au pair’s contract, she may be required to some basic housework and possibly childcare. Many au pairs are young adults looking to expand their experience, and explore another culture. By becoming an au pair, the young person can do exactly that.

Some host families prefer Christian au pairs, as they are in better synch with the expectations of the family, as well as keep outside influences to a minimum. The Christian au pair is enabled to discover aspects of her faith that the au pair may not be able to explore in her home environment. Because of the shared background, the au pair and her host family have a common ground that gives them an advantage of a non-Christian au pair and family.

The family has the obligation to treat the Christian au pair as part of the family, as well as give her a stipend. Also, the contract allows for access to a local college for advanced language lessons. In exchange, the au pair does light housework and some childcare. Being an au pair is essentially a part-time job, working for 25-30 hours maximum, depending on the contract and the laws of the countries involved in the exchange.

An au pair usually will stay from one to two years (with two years being the maximum), but terms of just one to three months are not uncommon, especially for the summer months. The length of service may be negotiated, but the au pair usually has a goal of her own and the length of service is predicated upon that.

Another consideration is what specific jobs you negotiate with your au pair. Although childcare and light housework are the usual, some Christian families will negotiate other services, such as religious instruction. Some families have negotiated yard work or other services instead of the standard services, but these are exceptions, and should be expected.

An au pair has much to offer a host family. Besides acting as an extra pair of hands when needed, she can also be of great assistance when the parents need someone to keep an eye on the children. Also, the cultural exchange that an au pair represents should not be overlooked, especially in a world growing ever smaller. By comparing the culture in which she finds herself with the culture she comes from, an au pair can help teach the children to appreciate other cultures. By acting as an ambassador of her control, and by demonstrating the similarities as well as differences, a Christian Aupair can be an interesting asset for a host family.
