I come by my love and appreciation of gemstones and jewelry honestly. It's in my blood. My dad was and still is a gemstone dealer and designer / creator of exceptional jewelry (see some of his creations on AfricaGems.com). In college, I got my degree in geology with the emphasis on mineralogy. My first job after college (1984) was as a geologist in Zambia, prospecting for Emeralds. I later bought the mining rights to a famous aquamarine mine which I actively mined for 4 years. Talk about learning about things from the bottom up! I lived in Zambia and travelled throughout Africa for the next 17 years before settling down in the San Francisco Bay Area. The contacts and experiences during those 17 years enable me to get the best gem materials for excellent prices. I realized early on the power of the Internet so I established AfricaGems.com in 1997 and operate it full time. I love being able to bring superior gemstones and jewels to my customers worldwide. I don't travel to Africa as often as I used to, but I try to go several times a year.
When I am not working with and for my clients, I spend my time focused on my lovely and talented wife Lily Kanter, former executive for Microsoft and co-founder and CEO of her own business - Serena & Lily, and our three sons, Max, Ezekiel and Nate. Living in the San Francisco Bay Area affords me many opportunities to garden, boat, fish, and spend time enjoying outdoor adventures with my family.
