Science Fiction and Fantasy: Xenite.Org -- Worlds of Imagination on the Web

Description

Extensive content sections devoted to science fiction and fantasy topics including essays, mailing lists, discussion forums, F.A.Q.s, news, special features, merchandise, and more.

History

Launched in March 1997 as an umbrella domain for several previously developed sites, Xenite.Org quickly developed a flair for trying out new Web tools and innovations. Many smaller science fiction fan sites often copied ideas from Xenite's innovative Web projects, including the launch of specialty directories, operating niche search engines and banner networks, and building out large Web forum communities.

Although Xenite founder Michael Martinez has been largely responsible for most of the domain's content, a number of "guest articles" and fan fiction archives have appeared among Xenite's eclectic topics. The domain also hosted the official Web site for the now-defunct Xenite and Herkulean Webmasters Association (which lasted about four years and had more than 200 active members at one time).

In 1999 Xenite launched SF-Worlds.com, then an experimental news site covering science fiction topics through multiple RSS feeds. Recognized by other SF fan sites as the leading source of science fiction news, SF-Worlds lost its news feeds in the dot-com meltdown of 2001. The site remains part of Xenite's network but now features a collection of short articles and long jokes about science fiction worlds.

In 2001 the popular Xenite forums were moved to their own domain, SF-Fandom, which hosts the official Kevin Sorbo (television's Hercules) Australian Fan Club Forum. The SF-Fandom forum devoted to New Zealand actor Kevin Smith was recognized by news organizations around the world upon his untimely death and more than 15,000 fan messages were posted there in his memory.

SF-Fandom also hosts the Andre Norton forum, the only Web forum she is reported to have visited.

Although the Xenite.Org network remains focused on science fiction and fantasy, some of Martinez' personal interest sites on the domain have become legendary in other fields. The Xenite White Cheese Dip section has received so much traffic that major retailers have picked up at least one company's cheese dip product as a result of Xenite's support.

Martinez' lively personal account of his career as a dance student and Salsa club regular in west Houston is accompanied by interviews he conducted with dance teachers, Salsa artists, club owners, and other dancers. The 50+ page Salsa section has become one of Xenite's most popular destinations.

Movie and television studios have occasionally provided Xenite.Org with exclusive content and privileges of access. Xenite's occasional in-depth investigative reporting articles haven broken major news, including the announcement that Peter Jackson ("The Lord of the Rings") had signed with New Line Cinema two days prior to the official announcement in 1998.
