After being hired to take all photographs for a Guatemalan art and antiques web site, Mr. Scagliarini moved to the San Francisco Bay Area, switched from the camera to a computer and contracted with Microsoft to design merchants’ web presences on sidewalk.com online city guides for the San Francisco and Seattle editions. That was 1996 and the World Wide Web was just two years old. No one could have foreseen how much this new technology would change our lives.
