Willamette Backcountry Ski Patrol Home

Description

Background

The Willamette Backcountry Ski Patrol was formed during the winter of 1982-83 to serve nordic skiers in the Willamette Pass area. The Patrol was formed in response to safety concerns of the US Forest Service, area search and rescue personnel, and nordic skiing enthusiasts. Beginning as a group of US Forest Service Volunteers, the Patrol engaged in ski trail maintenance, distribution of winter safety information and evacuation of injured nordic skiers. During the summer of 1983, the Patrol became an affiliate of the National Ski Patrol System Inc. as the fourth NSPS Nordic ski patrol in Oregon.

The Patrol consists of experienced volunteers trained in winter first aid, search, rescue and evacuation procedures. The Patrol provides first aid and rescue services without charge. The Patrol cooperates with other winter safety agencies such as the Willamette Pass Ski Patrol, Eugene Mountain Rescue and various county sheriff departments. Originally, the Patrol operated out of a small warming hut at the Gold Lake Sno-Park. In 1986 a 20'x30' public warming cabin and first aid station was constructed and serves as the Patrol's winter headquarters. Over the years numerous improvements have been added, making The Cabin one of the finest public Nordic facilities in the area.

The Patrol operates in conjunction with the Willamette National Forest, under an annually renewed Agreement For Sponsored Voluntary Services. During search and rescue missions, the Patrol operates under the jurisdiction of the Lane County Sheriff's office.
