TheSociety of Midwest Contesters formed early in 1985 with the goal of uniting Midwest contesters into a competitive group and to further the idea of radiosporting in the Midwest. From 51 charter members in the summer of 1985, we've grown to a membership of over 300 contesters, mainly in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Missouri, and Wisconsin. Led by then president, Steve Dubberstein, K9WO, we launched our first major contest effort in the 1985 November Sweepstakes, winning the unlimited class. We repeated that performance in the 1986 SS, and were on our way. Since then, familiar calls like NN1N, K9ZO, and K9NW (ex N0BSH) have led this group, continually drawing together the experience of the Midwest's contesting greats to cultivate some of today's best, up-and-coming operators. K9PG took over as president in May 2000. Since then, the SMC has quintupled in size and is still growing! Our brightest moment was coming out of nowhere in 2000 to win the Unlimited Team Title in Sweepstakes. The perennial winners, the PVRC and NCCC never saw it coming and were shocked when it was announced at the Dayton 2001 contest forum. We surprised them again by amassing over 22 million points in 2001 to take the title again. Then, in the face of intense competition, we turned out 387 logs to out distance the competition by nearly 7M points in 2002 to complete the 3-peat.
