Our election system is at the heart of America's democracy. Yet as we saw in the 2000 Presidential Election, and continue to see today, we can't rely on our current system to be transparent, fair, or accurate. In fact, a Caltech/MIT study found that between 4 and 6 MILLION votes did not get counted, or were miscounted, in the 2000 Presidential Election.
There's a growing debate about how to fix the numerous problems that have been identified – problems like confusing ballots, antiquated equipment, poor polling place practices, and purges of legal voters from the voter roles. Different states and counties are trying different fixes, even though the reliability of these fixes hasn’t been tested. And some localities continue to "leave well enough alone."
