EIL is a worldwide intercultural learning organisation founded in 1932 as the Experiment in International Living. It is the oldest educational exchange organisation in the world, operating in over 30 countries and involving over 25,000 people each year on a variety of cultural integration programmes. It is a non-profit, non-religious and non-political association which was introduced to Ireland in 1960.
In 1989 EIL was designated a ‘Peace Messenger Organisation’ by the United Nations. The work of EIL is recognised with consultative status by the Council of Europe and the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). EIL is also a member of the National Youth Council of Ireland.
As a non-profit intercultural organisation, EIL is dedicated to increasing awareness and understanding between cultures. Our volunteers work alongside local people and are supported by local co-ordinators who share our vision.
