- I have been fascinated by airplanes for as long I can remember. I grew up with my great-grandmother near a major airport in the Pacific Island of Guam in the late 1980s and throughout the 1990s. Her house was situated less than two miles from the threshold of runway 6L, and every day, the thunderous roar and the shiny aluminum of the 747s that came from Asia and Hawai’i never ceased to thrill me as they passed overhead. Two of my dad’s brothers work for Continental Airlines (Continental Micronesia in those days), and at times, I was allowed hangar and ramp access. I remember sitting in the flight decks of some of CO’s now historic aircraft (747, DC-10, 727) and the distinct feeling of the power of technology all within that small space.
