The world’s first manufacturer of commercial-style ranges designed for use at home, the Viking Range Corporation was founded in 1984 by a fourth-generation building contractor in an effort to produce the appliance he wanted to use in his own kitchen. Viking Range stoves combine the high-quality features of restaurant-style stoves with the convenience, safety features, and ease of installation of home appliances.
Viking Range began with its signature product: a heavy-duty range with beautiful design and the high heat output necessary for professional-quality culinary results. When the company submitted its first designs to the American Gas Association laboratories for certification, the organization’s technicians and staff had to design several new measures and tests to assess the unique product's impressive capabilities. After more than a year of evaluation and testing, the AGA finally passed the Viking Range stove, and the company put its first line into production. Soon after production began in January 1987, Viking Range grew rapidly, quickly outpacing its manufacturing capabilities. In October 1989, the company began planning a new factory in the founder's hometown of Greenwood, Mississippi.
Today, Viking Range maintains its corporate headquarters in Greenwood, in addition to production and distribution facilities totaling more than 600,000 square feet. No longer only offering stoves, Viking Range today is well known for refrigerators, freezers, warming drawers, waste disposers, wine cellars, and outdoor products. In 2002, Viking Range expanded into a new market of culinary products, including stand mixers, blenders, and food processors. The company also promotes a number of culinary lifestyle events and classes, including cooking classes, gourmet food appreciation events, and online lessons.
