Description
Set in the midst of the mountainous Caucasian Highlands, Armenia is a part of eastern Asia Minor. As a Christian enclave, this country had from early on been a focus of political strife and oppression.
It is a landlocked country of about two million inhabitants, who ten years ago took for granted all the amenities of modern life such as electricity, running water, telephone and transport, but today have to cope with rudimentary infrastructure.
Within the Soviet Union Armenia achieved relative prosperity with a thriving economy and high technology. Then came the first setback with the devastating earthquake of 1988, whose damaging effects have not been overcome even today. At the same time the Soviet Union was falling apart; Armenia became independent. Relations with its neighbours began to crumble in the political confusion. Locked borders and the collapse of the energy supply were the result.
