The idea for Vacationkids.com began in the Summer of 1999. I had been working for one of the top online travel sites. Over the years, I've learned that you can travel affordably, just about anywhere, once you understand some of the secrets of the travel industry. I told my three teens I would take them on vacation but the deal was, they would have to do all the travel planning. I would make the final reservations and just pack my luggage. I thought it would be a good, practical, real life lesson for them to learn...

The kids had an extremely hard time making our travel plans. We all soon discovered that there were not many sites devoted to family travel and vacation planning. The sites that claimed to specialize in family vacations really didn't offer any of the practical knowledge necessary for families to make affordable and intelligent decisions. For example, many resorts advertise that they are

“family-friendly” but try booking two parents and three children into one of their rooms. Parents are soon shocked to learn that they must pay for an extra room to accommodate their family. This doesn't sound very friendly to me. The kids and I worked through researching all the possible destinations and finally decided on Beaches Resort on the Caribbean Island of Turks and Caicos. It was a perfect vacation and we all agree, one of the best we've ever had.
