Description
WKBD signed on the air in January of 1965, the pioneering days of independent UHF television. The original owners, Kaiser Broadcasting, selected a site in Southfield, just beyond the Detroit city limits, which is today a sprawling community of residential and business activities. Located on over fifty acres of land surrounding a 1,056-foot tower, WKBD is positioned near what is now the population center of the Detroit Metropolitan area. The station began telecasting as an all-sports station, preceding ESPN by more than fifteen years, and has been the proud flagship station for Detroit Pistons basketball and Detroit Red Wings hockey for more than three decades. Many popular locally-originated programs contributed to WKBD's success through the years as well, including "The Lou Gordon Show" and "Bill Kennedy At The Movies."
The studios and offices are located in a state-of-the-art facility covering 56,000 square feet including a 10,000 square-foot technical center. Utilizing a newly-installed 2.2 megawatt transmitter, WKBD's signal effectively covers the metropolitan area and is carried throughout and far beyond the DMA by numerous cable systems, of which WKBD is an integral offering. The station broadcasts over-the-air on Channel 50 and has a parallel digital signal on DTV Channel 14, where programming is also telecast in high-definition when available.
Many of the most successful first-run and syndicated programs have been carried by WKBD, which has consistently ranked among the top-rated stations in the country. Immensely popular programming in the past like "M*A*S*H," "The Facts Of Life" "Family Ties," "Diff’rent Strokes," and all series of the "Star Trek" franchise have all been key players in the station's success through the years. With current hits like "Frasier," "Friends," "The Simpsons," "Everybody Loves Raymond,” and "That 70’s Show" as well as upcoming programs like “The King Of Queens,” “Becker,” and “Malcolm In The Middle,” WKBD continues to maintain its tradition of offering the very best in syndicated programming.
