History

On July1, 1862, the incorporation of Union Pacific Railroad took place under the Pacific Railroad Act, 1862. The governing shareholder Thomas C. Durant laid down the first rails in Omaha, Nebraska under its complete supervision. Subsequently, many of the regions were covered by the links of rails of Union Pacific. The regions of Utah Central starting from Southern part of Ogden of Utah, through Salt Lake City were taken up by the Union Pacific. Kansas Pacific which was originally known as Union Pacific was also acquired by it. Union Pacific Railroad owned the regular gauge line which is from the regions of south of Denver into Texas through New Mexico. Union Pacific Railroad Also acquired the narrow gauge into the central part of the Colorado Rockies.

Initially Union Pacific Railroad have owned and taken up the control of tracks of 23 states in United States like Arkansas, Colorado, California, Arizona, Idaho, Iowa, Montana, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, Texas, Washington, Utah, Wyoming, Wisconsin etc. The network of Union Pacific Railroad and Union Pacific Corporation is divided among 21 states for carrying out the administrable activity and which can be termed as “service units”.

An independent as well as a non-profit organization was founded in 1984 which was completely dedicated towards the history preservation of the Union Pacific Railroad as it was at the time of its incorporation in 1862 till as it is now. The society is not affiliated or supported by the railroad. The official website of Union Pacific Historical Society is mainly intended to inform the interested persons about the current events as well as about the history of Union Pacific Railroad. The information is revealed through magazines, books and CDs that are continuously made available for the use of general public. Members of the Union Pacific Historical Society are benefited by the quarterly magazine issued by the society. The name of the magazine is “The Streamliner”.
