Unity Temple Restoration Foundation
Description
Unity Temple Restoration Foundation was founded in 1973 with the mission to completely restore Frank Lloyd Wright'sarchitectural masterpiece, Unity Temple. Its goal is to complete restoration by 2009, the 100th anniversary of the dedication of the building. Unity Temple is one of seventeen structures designed by Wright to earn special recognition from the American Institute of Architects as representative of his contribution to American culture.
Upon its completion in 1908, Frank Lloyd Wright said that “Unity Temple makes an entirely new architecture…and is the first expression of it. That is my contribution to modern architecture. And that, to me, is modern architecture.” Much of the architectural community quickly agreed with Wright’s own assessment of his design.
When Unity Church of Oak Park was struck by lightning and burned to the ground in 1905, Frank Lloyd Wright was commissioned to design a new building for the congregation. He was faced with several problems, including a limited budget, a long, narrow and noisy corner lot, and a client that needed a structure that would serve both as a place of worship and a meeting place for the congregation and the community.
