Shabby Chic, Country French, Rustic Log Cabin, & Western Home Decor & Accessories!

Description

Starting out at 17 years old, I worked for a company in Phoenix, Arizona, (Quilting by Halas), where I was hired with "artistic abilities and sewing skills". I learned to make custom bedspreads and all the accessories for homes that you see in showcase homes, model homes, and decorating magazines. By the time I was 23 years old I was working full time in my own business - sewing these same type of things for other interior designers - throughout Arizona and southern California. I called myself "Quilting by Diane". (Original, huh?!?) At a very young age I found myself to be respected and trusted enough by the designers I worked for that they would send me the bolts of fabric and ask my opinion on what should be done with them. I found I was actually doing interior design even way back then!

After meeting my husband, I finished my education in interior design. We eventually ended up moving to the White Mountains of Arizona where I had my own interior design business. As "Decor Creations" I did quite well, building an extensive portfolio. With work that has literally been shipped around the world, showcase homes, millionaire homes and published in different magazines and trade journals...I found I was busy enough with my own clients that I stopped sewing for all the other interior designers as I had been doing. The biggest request I had from all my clients living in the mountains was to provide them with rustic and mountain accessories different from what everybody else had. With my background in art and sewing...I knew I could fabricate these things on my own. So, I started building up "Unique Rustique" on the side while still designing as "Decor Creations". What I found was...I really loved the creativity of the artwork and new products I was creating over selling someone new window blinds! So...I began to add more and more items to "Unique Rustique". Our design gallery was growing. Most of the items were not yet added to the website, as I was still just selling to my clients. The website was to come along a piece at a time. Little did we know that a huge change in our lives was coming!

When the forest fire wiped out our home and business, we lost ALL my business supplies. Starting with a portfolio of over 30 years of interior design work! And it took out all the designs and prototypes my husband and I had built and created for the business. (Since my husband has an extensive background in construction, he has been invaluable as my wood furniture builder!) This caused us to make a major decision. Without my portfolio, showing what I can do and have done, it was very difficult to continue designing ... without basically starting over! So, after my husband and I spent countless hours in discussion, the decision was made to stop doing interior design and concentrate on creating new things for Unique Rustique. First we had to deal with all the insurance nightmares, then the time involved in finding a new area to live (We chose NOT to remain in a dry forest area with pine beetles killing off all the trees!) After finding this incredibly beautiful area of our country in the forests of northern Idaho, we waited until school was out for our son. So, since the beginning of June, 2003...we have finally been able to start putting the business and our lives back together.
